Judy sprang for one of those Groupon deals I shudder about. $160 worth of a dozen wines we’d never heard of? Well, we have them, at a cost to ourselves of about $60. Now we’ll try one every once in a while. If I don’t write about some of them, it will be because I didn’t like them. You’ll read my comments if in fact I think you’d be glad to know.

A word in defense of (some) value wine buys often overlooked as “cheap”
Well, in particular, I mean right now to say a few words about Trader Joe’s exclusive offerings of Charles Shaw (“Two Buck Chuck”) wines from Bronco, one of America’s biggest wine producers.
A brilliant, delicious Tempranilla from Spain’s mid-Rioja region
I’d love to get a few more bottles of the 2008 Crianza from Bodegas Riolanc in Spain . . . but the bottle label warns: “The grape yield was just 1.6 kilograms per vine and the grapes were hand-harvested. Very limited production.” Lucky break for me, since it’s one of the wine club offerings from Food and Wine magazine nephew Ron gave me when I turned 80 in June.
A South African Sauvignon Blanc and a real French Gamay Beaujolais with a meal built around clams (some of them from Thailand)
I finally broke open the first two bottles of a lavish 80th-birthday gift — a year’s subscription to Food and Wine magazine’s wine club. Nephew Ron went way overboard, I’m afraid, but that’s not a complaint! Thanks again, Ron and Sherry.
